Does Wearing Glasses Annoy You!
When you start to need glasses
and the visits to the opticians become more and more frequent, then
you might want to look at this condition and a possible treatment,
but sadly not on the NHS, look no further if your pockets aren't
deep. The condition known as Presbyopia is not the same as long-sightedness
though - Normally the eye adjusts so that it can focus to near and
far distances. When we are younger with youthful eyes the cilliary
muscle contracts to change the shape of the lens allowing focusing.
As we get older the lens becomes harder, thicker and therefore less
flexible. Only by wearing glasses and probably verifocal glasses
can you manage this condition. The condition can now be operated
on with surgery and is not the same as laser surgery as it requires
a minute surgical cut to insert a new lens. The surgery is reported
to be painless and there is a 20% risk that you may still need to
wear glasses. Typically an operation costs £2,275 per eye
- more information available at the www.grangeyeconsultants.com
clinic website. As Coffeetimeonline is an international website
there is a currency converter on the Essential
Links page to convert the above GBP price. 1/2/07
Oh
for a good nights sleep
Would your eating habits have anything
to do with it? Eating to much or not eating enough can all affect
the way we sleep at night. Eating a big meal late in the evening
is not recommended and not eating at all isn't either, so what might
work is this formula, cut down on the protein and vegetables in
the evening and increase the carbohydrates. Apparently carbohydrates
can give you a calming effect encouraging serotonin, a chemical
that promotes that contented feeling. Foods like potatoes, rice,
pasta and wholegrain bread are suitable choices, but not to much.
For those worried about their weight, weight loss is still possible
while including carbohydrate in the evening meal, as apparently
carbohydrates don't turn into fat overnight while you are sleeping.
If this still worries you beans lentils etc can be a suitable alternative.
Cold or hot milk is good before the nights sleep but alcohol, coffee
or tea is a no. Beer apparently because of the hop content has some
sedative effect but to much might have the opposite effect. Herbal
teas such as passion flower, camomile and lemon balm are all helpful.
One thing for sure, there will be no one answer for everyone, so
conduct your own experiment over a few weeks until you find what
helps you. A short walk or stroll before going to bed can help a
lot for most people.
Research
in US is now showing that the babies dummy could reduce cot deaths
Giving
your baby a dummy at bedtime may reduce their risk of cot death
by 90% a US study has shown. 185 cases of sudden infant death syndrome
were compared with 312 healthy babies for this research. The greatest
benefit The
British Medical Journal found was for babies sleeping in an "adverse"
environment. More
information on the BBC website.
The common cold and hay fever
If
you are a hayfever sufferer then you probably have noticed that
your winter time common colds seem to be worse than friends common
colds that do not suffer from the allergy driven condition. Understandably
once your nasal passages become sore caused by the cold symptoms
they then become just like in summer more vulnerable
to your allergy symptoms (house dust etc) making the cold even worse
compared with someone who does not have the hay fever allergic symptoms.
It may be worth considering in consultation
with your doctor
also treating your hayfever at the same time as the cold. Report
and observation by the website editor Michael Craft.
Asthma attacks and wheezy chests could
be caused by eating junk food!
Eating
hamburgers more than once a week apparently increases the chances
of asthma attacks and wheezing in children. A
research report carried out on 1300 New Zealand school pupils was
viewable on the New Zealand Herald website http://www.nzherald.co.nz
and also mentioned on the daily mail website Daily
Mail. Other takeaway food and those fizzy drinks where also
found to increase the possibility of getting asthma New Zealand
doctors found. Visit the websites for further detailed information.
German scientists say they have proof
about the effectiveness of acupuncture.
Proof
that acupuncture works
is not in short supply as far as the traditional acupuncturists
are concerned, but now German scientist have joined the supporters
and declared they have proof of it's effectiveness for a lot of
complaints. The ancient Chinese treatment cut the rates of headaches
by nearly half in a study of 270 people. The British Acupuncture
Council is the UK's main regulatory body for the practice of acupuncture
by over 2500 professionally qualified acupuncturists http://www.acupuncture.org.uk
Does Olive Oil work as well as an
aspirin!
Researchers
based at the University of Pennsylvania have identified the main
compound in olive oil that has the same properties as ibuprofen
the painkiller. Like aspirin ibuprofen has been thought to be linked
to a lower risk of cancer and heart problems. It is suggested that
olive oil can prevent inflammation in just the same way as the our
common everyday headache pills. It is the Extra Virgin Olive oil
that is made from the first pressing that the study refers too and
suggests is the most beneficial. Olive
oil being a typical average every day component of the Mediterranean
diet is gathering substantial evidence of the health benefits of
this diet that is rich in fish, unsaturated fats, vegetables and
fruit.

was a cure for the common cold or at least for the coughing part!

one third more effective in stopping a persistent cough than codeine.

the beef out of Bovril!
It was reported this week that
Bovril is to remove beef from it's very popular and famous beef
drink. It's wholesome ingredients was the choice of popular explorers
and was an important part of army rations not to mention the family

Bath
baby in daylight!
Taking baby for a walk in the
afternoon helps babies to sleep better at night it was reported
this week. The reason it appears is that exposure to daylight helps
baby's biological clock develop more quickly. Crying babies cause
major disruption among parents said a report in the Journal of Sleep
Research. A study showed that between 5 and 19 per cent of babies
cry persistently for no obvious reason.
Tea is good for your heart?
A freshly brewed cup of tea
is a great British tradition and how sensible we are! It appears
that tea is good for your heart and mind, it is high in antioxidants
and has been seen to guard against stroke and heart disease. We
drink about 12 million hot drinks each day with more than 6.5 million
of us drinking more than ten cups of tea a day. If you are putting
the kettle on no sugar for me please - this seems to be the downfall,
sugar turns a good healthy drink into into a less beneficial sweet
beverage. The sugar just has to go! The best way to reduce your
sugar in drinks is to reduce it slowly over a year, slowly you will
not like your drink with so much sugar in it.

Middle
age spread.
A report in the Journal of the
American Medical Association said the secret to losing middle-aged
tummy fat might be a hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone or simply
DHE. At the age of 20 this hormone has peaked and then it declines
gradually and by the time we reach 70 we have only about 20% of
our peak amount circulating in our body. 11/02/04
